Joseph Addison (16721719) was an English statesman whose
writings strongly influenced taste and opinion in Britain during the 18th
century. Although his reputation has declined over time, he is regarded
as one of the originators of the modern essay style. His contributions
to The Tatler and The Spectator , both founded by his friend Sir
Richard Steele (16721729), are considered to be some of his finest
essays.
